Chivay is a highland town in Peru’s Arequipa Region and the main urban center of the Colca Valley. Set at more than 3,600 meters above sea level, it lies among cultivated slopes, rugged mountains, and deep valleys shaped by the Colca River. The town serves as an important gateway to the Colca Canyon and surrounding communities, with accommodations, restaurants, markets, and transport connections supporting visitors exploring the area. Chivay itself has a traditional central plaza and streets that reflect a combination of Andean customs and colonial-era architectural influences, giving the town a distinct regional identity.

Chivay is closely connected with the Collagua and Cabana communities of the Colca Valley, whose agricultural and cultural traditions remain visible in everyday life. The town is particularly associated with the Wititi, an Andean courtship dance performed during religious and community celebrations. Dancers wear distinctive embroidered clothing, hats, and layered skirts, with designs often featuring birds and flowers. The dance is recognized by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage. Chivay also has an important religious landmark in the Church of the Immaculate Conception, while local festivals bring together music, dance, processions, traditional clothing, and community gatherings.

The Colca Valley provides Chivay with a dramatic highland setting of terraced fields, volcanic peaks, winding rivers, and steep canyon walls. La Calera hot springs are located just outside town, where visitors can bathe in naturally heated mineral water surrounded by mountain scenery. Chivay is also a convenient starting point for exploring the Colca Canyon and reaching viewpoints such as Cruz del Cóndor, where Andean condors can often be observed soaring above the canyon. Nearby villages including Yanque, Coporaque, and Maca offer additional churches, archaeological features, agricultural landscapes, and opportunities to see traditional village life.

Food in Chivay reflects the agricultural traditions of the high Andes, with potatoes, corn, quinoa, broad beans, grains, and locally raised meats appearing in regional dishes. Trout from the mountain waterways is another common ingredient, while soups and stews provide practical meals in the cool highland climate. Alpaca meat is also served in some local restaurants, prepared in dishes suited to Andean cuisine. The area is known for its handmade textiles, particularly embroidered garments and hats decorated with colorful natural motifs. Alpaca and llama fibers are used in woven goods, linking local crafts with the pastoral traditions of the Colca Valley.

Cusco
Cusco
Cusco once served as the heart of the Inca Empire, and that legacy still shapes every corner of the city even as it serves as a gateway to Machu Picchu. Outside the historic center, the ruins of Sacsayhuamán overlook the city from a nearby hilltop. This ceremonial complex is best known for its massive zigzag stone walls, some weighing over 100 tons. During the Inti Raymi festival in June, thousands gather here to reenact ancient Andean rituals.

Machu Picchu
Machu Picchu
Machu Picchu is a story carved into stone, perched nearly 2,500 meters above sea level in the cloud forests of southern Peru. Built in the 15th century and later abandoned, this Inca citadel was unknown to the outside world until 1911, when explorer Hiram Bingham brought it to international attention. Today, it remains remarkably well-preserved, with more than 150 stone structures, terraced fields, ceremonial fountains, and temples aligned with astronomical events.
